FOPH: Federal Council extends National Strategy for Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and National Addiction Strategy until 2028
21. August 2024 – The Federal Council has decided to extend the National Strategy for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD Strategy) and the National Addiction Strategy until 2028 and has tasked the development of a follow-up strategy. This decision aims to strengthen the prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, as well as mental health disorders and addiction. These conditions are widespread in Switzerland and incur significant health costs. Prevention can help delay or avoid these conditions, thereby improving the quality of life for those affected.
From 2025 to 2028, the NCD Strategy will focus on enhancing mental health, preventing tobacco and nicotine use, and addressing overweight and obesity. Additionally, the National Addiction Strategy will address substance misuse and behavioral addictions. Emphasis will be placed on ensuring health equity for all population groups. A strategic follow-up plan for 2029 will also be developed to ensure continued progress and sustainability in health promotion.
