FOPH: Federal Council approves key points for the legalization of egg donation

30. Januar 2025 – The Federal Council has decided to revise the Reproductive Medicine Act (RMA), focusing on the legalization egg donation, as requested by Parliament in 2021. This will also allow infertile women to access egg donations, much like sperm donations for male infertility. The revision also aims to protect egg donors and ensure the welfare of the child, though regulating donations made abroad presents significant challenges.

The revision will extend sperm donation to unmarried couples. Currently, a shift from the current restriction to married couples. Additionally, the «twelve-embryo rule» in IVF treatments may be relaxed.

Other proposed changes to the law include allowing longer storage of frozen sperm, eggs, and embryos beyond the current ten-year limit. The Federal Department of Home Affairs (Eidgenössisches Departement des Innern, EDI) has been tasked with preparing a consultation draft by the end of 2026.
