Consultation on direct medical prescriptions for cannabis-based treatments
10 July 2019 – The Federal Council intends to facilitate access to treatments based on medical cannabis. At its meeting of 26 June 2019, the Federal Council submitted a draft amendment to the Narcotics Act (SR 812.121; Betäubungsmittelgesetz; NarcA) for consultation. The draft provides that patients can obtain direct medical prescriptions for cannabis-based treatments with a THC content of more than 1% without having to obtain an exceptional licence from the Federal Office of Public Health. For this purpose, the prohibition to place medical cannabis on the Swiss market of the NarcA shall be repealed. The cultivation, processing and trading of medicinal cannabis will thereby become legal within the framework of a control system secured by Swissmedic (for further information, see: here).
