Swissmedic: Warning regarding allegedly herbal products

28 August 2024 – Swissmedic issued a warning about an increase in products marketed online and through social media as herbal teas, herbal capsules, or natural liquid concentrates. These products are often promoted for weight loss or to treat erectile dysfunction. However, some consumers have suffered severe side effects after using them. Analysis in the Swissmedic laboratory revealed that certain products – contrary to the declaration on the packaging – are not purely herbal or natural. Instead, they contain undeclared synthetic pharmaceutical substances, sometimes in pharmacologically active doses or even in massive overdoses.

Swissmedic strongly advises caution regarding slimming products and other items that claim to be natural, particularly those sold as teas, instant drinks, or «natural» capsules. The agency also warns against purchasing any medicinal products or medical devices from unknown sources on the internet or through social networks.
