FOPH: «DigiSanté» – Launch of digital transformation in the Swiss healthcare system
25 November 2024 – The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) has announced the start of the national «DigiSanté» program on January 1, 2025. This initiative aims to advance the digitalization of the Swiss healthcare system, enhance quality, and reduce administrative burdens. The program emphasizes secure and interoperable data exchange, while adhering to the «Once-Only Principle» ensuring that information is collected once and used efficiently. The establishment of mandatory standards for data exchange, alongside rigorous data protection and cybersecurity measures, remains a priority.
The phased implementation of «DigiSanté», scheduled to take place from 2025 to 2034, includes legislative initiatives, infrastructural services, and the development of standardized guidelines. The federal government will support and coordinate these efforts and will provide the necessary legal framework for planning and investment security. Private sector entities are encouraged to develop their services based on the state-provided infrastructure.
The success of DigiSanté will depend on the collaboration of all healthcare stakeholders. Since the program's inception, entities such as the FOPH, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), and various expert groups have been actively involved. Initial projects include SpiGes (data reuse initiatives) and SpiReg (unified hospital identification systems), both of which aim to facilitate efficient data utilization and ensure standardization. These projects are set to launch in 2025 and will be developed progressively.
