In the report, the Federal Council concludes that further efficiency gains are possible in the hospital sector to support cost containment. It particularly advocates for stronger inter-cantonal coordination, for example through jointly maintained hospital lists. The Federal Council has announced that it will closely monitor the implementation of the recently updated recommendations of the Conference of Cantonal Health Directors (Konferenz der kantonalen Gesundheitsdirektorinnen und -direktoren, GDK) and, on this basis, determine whether further clarification of the existing framework is required. While the Federal Council acknowledges the cantons' competence in hospital planning, it does not entirely rule out the possibility of nationwide planning in the future.
