FOPH: Federal Council adopts measures to enhance supply on medicinal products

22 août 2024 – The Federal Council has adopted a comprehensive package of measures to improve the supply of medicinal products. In response to increasing global shortages and associated health risks, Switzerland plans to expand compulsory stockpiles of essential medicinal products, refrain from reducing prices for critical medicinal products, and facilitate imports. Additionally, incentives will be introduced to promote the production of essential medicinal products.

The Federal Council also aims to optimize the supply of therapeutic products in the event of a pandemic and has tasked the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) with establishing an expert group to develop additional measures to enhance supply security by the end of 2025. Furthermore, a list of essential medicinal supplies for pandemic scenarios will be compiled, and the procurement and distribution of these supplies will be clearly regulated. The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) will be responsible for implementing and preparing for pandemic supply needs. These measures are intended to clarify responsibilities and ensure the availability of crucial medicinal supplies during crises.
