Environmental responsibility

At Walder Wyss, we believe that legal expertise and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we endeavour to reduce our own environmental impact, source sustainably and promote environmentally conscious solutions. Key areas of focus are energy efficiency, responsible use of resources and waste management. In 2024, we further started to measure key emission sources from our operational carbon footprint 2023 and continue the implementation of concrete measures to further assess and reduce it. Walder Wyss works with myclimate to assess the firm-wide calculations for key emission sources from our operational carbon footprint.

Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficiency

While 100% of our electricity is sourced from renewables, 48% of our total energy consumption still relies on non-renewable resources - driving our commitment to working closely with our landlords to secure where possible an increased renewable energy supply for heating while also reducing overall energy consumption.

To achieve this, we are optimizing our office infrastructure with energy-efficient lighting and equipment and implement switch-off mechanisms for devices.

At Walder Wyss, we aim to achieve the best value in our IT hardware sourcing while being mindful of our environmental impact. We have established specific service life guidelines for our IT equipment: iPhones (36 months), notebooks (52 months), and printers (6 years).

We ensure that hardware which remains functional but is no longer optimal is not discarded. Instead, we repurpose these devices to extend their lifecycle. iPhones and iPads are passed on to our employees for personal use, and notebooks are donated to the non-profit organization Labdoo, which refurbishes and distributes them to educational institutions in need. Through these initiatives, we contribute to reducing electronic waste and supporting educational causes.

In 2023, our firm used a total of 18,149.60 kg of paper, averaging 46.4kg per employee. We continue to reduce material consumption by expanding paperless processes and selecting sustainable office supplies to cut waste.

Additionally, we aim at increased recycling rates across all office materials and are implementing the use of recycled paper.

While the amount of waste produced could not be evaluated for the reporting period, minimizing waste is a top priority, and we invest significant effort in raising awareness among our employees about its importance. We enforce strict waste-separation and recycling practices, ensuring that materials such as coffee capsules are properly disposed of and repurposed. To minimize waste, we provide filtered tap water and reusable glass bottles to avoid the use of single-use plastics. When organizing events and catering, we prioritize local suppliers and opt for reusable crockery or eco-friendly disposable alternatives whenever possible and encourage the redistribution of surplus food.

Emissions

Our carbon footprint from the below mentioned categories (not including office commute and other relevant emission categories for a complete operational carbon footprint) results in 751.7 tCO2e emissions in 2023, with business travel as the largest contributor. We are actively working to reduce emissions through smarter travel policies and supply chain engagement. In addition, we continue to optimize our office spaces to ensure lower energy consumption and climate-conscious operations

* Please note that only the emission categories listed in the table above have been assessed. For a complete operational carbon footprint according to GHG protocol standards, more emission categories across the operational value chain need to be assessed. As we lease all our office spaces on a per-floor basis and our landlords do not yet provide exact heating and electricity consumption data for each unit, it is currently not possible to determine and disclose our precise energy usage. As a result, some calculations by myclimate rely on standard market assumptions.
