Environmental responsibility

At Walder Wyss, we believe that legal expertise and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we endeavour to reduce our own environmental impact, source sustainably and promote environmentally conscious solutions. Key areas of focus are energy efficiency, responsible use of resources and waste management.

Walder Wyss works with ‘myclimate’ to assess the company-wide calculations for key emission sources from our operational carbon footprint. Key areas of focus are Energy, Travel, Material, Waste and Recycling. In 2024, our total operational emissions amounted to 910 tCO2e.

Energy

Energy

Energy

Our energy emission amount to 359 tCO2e. While 100% of our electricity is sourced from renewables, 42,33% of our total energy consumption still relies on non-renewable resources. As we rent office space in all our locations, our direct influence on energy sourcing and infrastructure is limited. Nevertheless, we actively engage with our landlords to advocate for more sustainable energy solutions and improvements. To further reduce our environmental impact, we continue to optimize our office infrastructure with energy-efficient lighting and equipment and implement switch-off mechanisms for devices.

Material

Material

Material

In 2024, material-related emissions at Walder Wyss amounted to 61 tCO2e. We aim to achieve the best value in our IT hardware sourcing while being mindful of our environmental impact. Specific service life guidelines have been established for our IT equipment, and hardware that remains functional but is no longer optimal is repurposed rather than discarded. iPhones and iPads are passed on to our employees for personal use, and notebooks are donated to the non-profit organization Labdoo, which refurbishes and distributes them to educational institutions in need. Through these initiatives, we contribute to reducing electronic waste and supporting educational causes.

In 2024, our firm used a total of 15’110 kg of paper, averaging 33,3 kg per employee. As part of the Walder Wyss digital strategy, we are actively working to digitalize internal processes and workflows. By expanding digital solutions, we aim to reduce paper consumption and promote more sustainable office practices across all locations.

Travel

Travel

Travel

Business travel is our largest source of emission, accounting for 490 tCO2e in 2024. Currently, only air travel is included in our emissions calculations. We are actively working to reduce these emissions through the implementation of smarter travel policies. For air travel within Europe, all employees are required to fly in Economy Class. For long-haul flights, Business Class may be used in accordance with internal guidelines.

Our carbon footprint from the below mentioned categories (not including office commute and other relevant emission categories for a complete operational carbon footprint) results in 909'979 tCO2e emissions in 2024, with business travel as the largest contributor. We are actively working to reduce emissions through smarter travel policies and supply chain engagement. In addition, we continue to optimize our office spaces to ensure lower energy consumption and climate-conscious operations.

* Please note that only the emission categories listed in the table above have been assessed. For a complete operational carbon footprint according to GHG protocol standards, more emission categories across the operational value chain need to be assessed. As we lease all our office spaces on a per-floor basis and our landlords do not yet provide exact heating and electricity consumption data for each unit, it is currently not possible to determine and disclose our precise energy usage. As a result, some calculations by myclimate rely on standard market assumptions.

Waste & recycling

Waste & recycling

Waste & recycling

Recycling practices are applied across all office materials, and Walder Wyss is implementing the use of recycled paper. In 2024, waste-related emissions were measured at 0,064 tCO2e, which reflects only paper destruction. Minimising waste is a top priority, and we invest significant effort in raising employee awareness and fostering a culture of waste separation and recycling. Strict practices ensure that materials such as coffee capsules are properly disposed of and repurposed. To further reduce waste, filtered tap water and reusable glass bottles are provided to avoid single-use plastics. For events and catering, we prioritise local suppliers, choose reusable dishes or eco-friendly disposable alternatives whenever possible, and encourage the redistribution of surplus food.
