General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applicable from 25 May 2018

5 May 2016 – On 4 May 2016, the official texts of the GDPR and the Data Protection Directive for the police and criminal justice sector (Directive) were published in the EU Official Journal.

The GDPR will enter into force on 24 May 2016 and be directly applicable from 25 May 2018.

The Directive entered into force on 5 May 2016. The EU member states have time until 8 May 2018 to transpose the Directive into their national law.
