Revision of the Swiss Federal Data Protection Act (DPA) split into two stages

15 January 2018 – On 11 January 2018, the Political Institutions Committee of the National Council voted in favour of the Federal Council's proposal to start the parliamentary debate on the total revision of the DPA and other related regulations. At the same time, it however supported an internal proposal for splitting the revision into two stages. Thus, the process of the total revision of the DPA will be prolonged.

The splitting of the revision into two stages will allow parliament to first discuss the parts which by virtue of the Schengen agreements must be implemented within a given timeframe (Directive 2016/680 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data in the field of criminal law). Subsequently, the total revision of the DPA shall be addressed. According to the majority of the Committee, this will allow addressing the total revision of the DPA without time pressure and dealing with the great complexity of the topic. Due to the Committee’s decision, the process of the total revision of the DPA will most certainly be prolonged.
