24 July 2019 – In a 23 July 2019 press release, the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) revealed that he requested Libra Association in Geneva to provide information about data protection measures in regards to Facebook’s cryptocurrency project. This statement comes as a reminder that the FDPIC is currently waiting for Libra Association to set out their official position.

The press release reveals that on 17 July 2019 the FDPIC sent a letter to Libra Association asking for details on users’ data protection with regard to the implementation of its cryptocurrency project. This inquiry followed the hearing of Mr David Marcus before the US Senate committee on 16 July 2019 stating that data protection would be considered a fundamental element of the project.

In relation to personal data protection, the FDPIC has noted that Libra Association should conduct an impact assessment in order to determine the risks related to data processing procedures and take all adequate measures to reduce these risks.
