Federal Council proposes assumption of costs for medical products from abroad

6 September 2021 – If a person insured in Switzerland under the compulsory health care insurance (OKP) obtains means and objects abroad, the costs are currently not covered by the OKP (territoriality principle). At its meeting on 1 September 2021, the Federal Council decided that health insurers should in future reimburse the costs of certain products purchased abroad, such as bandages or incontinence aids. It has instructed the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) to draw up the corresponding legal basis.
