Covid-19: Federal government expands wastewater monitoring to over 100 wastewater treatment plants
6 May 2022 – Effluent monitoring is an efficient and reliable tool to map the spread of Sars-CoV-2 in the population rapidly and over a large area. So far, six wastewater treatment plants have been evaluated as part of a research project conducted by the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag), the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich). Based on the findings of this project, a national monitoring system has now been established, which includes over 100 wastewater treatment plants that provide samples two to six times a week. They cover about 70% of the population of Switzerland. Wastewater monitoring is thus an important pillar of monitoring the epidemiological situation.
